Twenty-One—Irma

“Oh, dear!” I said.

Violet looked horrified.

Tony sighed.

Cynthia’s shoulders trembled. She was looking down at her lap. After a deep breath, she met my eyes.

She was bald.

Plucked-chicken bald.

“What on Earth happened?” I managed to get out.

“I have no clue.” She glanced at Tony. “We left Simone in charge of the not-a-reception and decided to go home and freshen up and change into something more casual before going back. I got out of my wedding dress and had a shower. I used some special shampoo and conditioner I’d been given as a gift at one of our engagement parties.”

“I just use something from the drugstore,” Tony said with a shrug.

“Because you don’t have long, colour-treated hair,” she said in a tone that implied they’d had this discussion before. But they were smiling at each other. She continued: “And when I rinsed everything out, all my hair went…out.”

“Was this the first time you used it?” I asked.

A nod. “I was saving it for a special…”

She didn’t look like she was going to finish that thought, so I said, “Do you remember who gifted it to you, dear?”

She mashed her lips together, like she was trying not to cry. “I looked at the list we made during the engagement party, but it says it was one of Tony’s distant relatives.”

“But…?”

Cynthia took a sip. “She’s dead.”

“So, someone changed the address card,” Violet said.

“Exactly.” Cynthia fiddled with a thread on her shirt.

“Right. Well, how can we help?”

“I was hoping to hire Violet to tackle the tech aspect of what’s going on. I’d like to know if anyone has left any digital…fingerprints, or whatever, on our wedding server. I want to know who’s behind all this. I’ve had enough.” Cynthia’s chin wavered.

Violet raised a hand. “I’ve been through that machine, Cynthia. I locked it down and put in a bunch of monitoring so if someone unauthorized gets in again, I’ll know about it. There’s nothing else to investigate, really. Someone from the island logged in and sent out the unvitations, and tried to cancel Mrs. Sepp’s services, but that’s it.”

“Huh?”

Violet caught them up on IP blocks and some other nerdy tidbits. Out on the lake, a sailboat I hadn’t seen before had tacked again and come about, and was now sailing past my house.

“How can we find out who owns that specific IP address?” Tony asked.

“The police could send a warrant to the internet hosting provider. But that takes time,” Violet said apologetically. “Plus, most residential IPs change pretty often. Whoever has that address now might be totally innocent.”

Cynthia and Tony threw each other a look.

“I’m sure Gertie will be fine,” I said, trying to sound reassuring. The two of them really did need it. Then I mentally shuffled through the questions I’d been collecting for the duo. I didn’t want to spook the poor dears, but, like Cynthia, I’d had enough. If Oaklynn was victim number one and her murderer had moved on to Gertie, then who was next? The police wouldn’t have the results of Oaklynn’s autopsy for weeks.
